Love this! Another golden oldie!
Brown butter in a large skillet. Add apples. Turn after a few minutes. Add brown sugar and water. Cover tightly and simmer until apples are tender, 15-20 minutes. Serve warm. If desired, serve with cream.

Are these dessert or cooking apples? I can't wait to try this!
These sound like the "Fried Apples" that I order every time we eat at Cracker Barrel. Now I can eat them at home too. Thanks for sharing!

Melt caramels with water in top of double boiler or in a saucepan over low heat. Stir occasionally until sauce is smooth. Insert a wooden stick into stem end of each apple. Dip into hot caramel sauce, and turn until coated. Scrape off excess sauce from bottom of apples. Place on greased wax paper; chill until firm.

Makes 6 caramel apples
Remove the stem from each apple and press a craft stick into the top. Butter a baking sheet.
Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave 2 minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool briefly.
Roll each apple quickly in caramel sauce until well coated. Place on prepared sheet to set.
Refrigerate the apples for about 15 minutes, or until the caramel has firmed up.
