We are throwing a Halloween dance at my middle school and I'm in charge of running the contest, but I'm having a hard time thinking of any thing that middle schoolers would enjoy. Please help!
You could make it a costume contest and break it down into categories such as most original, most outrageous, best couple, not couple like boyfriend and girlfriend but couple as in it takes 2 to pull the costume off like M&Ms or a horse where someone is the head and someone is the back. Once you decide your categories, you can have whoever is planning on participating register in the category they plan on entering. Just have them register what their costume will be not necessarily their names. Then you can make up voter ballots with the categories and registered costumes. At the dance pass out the ballots and have everyone vote for their favorites during the dance maybe 20 or 30 min before dance is over tally and announce the winners. The reason you only want to register the costumes not necessarily who is wearing the costume is for the sunrise at the end and also you want people voting for their favorite costume not just their favorite people. You want it to be a costume contest not a popularity contest. You might think of some better categories than I did, but those are just off the top of my head.
middle schoolers don't always like costume contest but you don't have to ear costumes. you could allow some leisure with a scariest contest where everyone runs with a costume or not or certain Halloween theme like most likely to be a which when they are older or most like count Dracula.. these are just a few ideas on the top of my head since i have planned one of these in the past
who can dress the scariest
who can win ghost in the grave yard gets a bucket of candy
who can dance the best to scary music

We are planning a Halloween dance. Not exactly sure what decorations to use.

Orange and black streamers. Jack o'lanterns (real ones, maybe, made by a class in the school for the dance.) Scarecrows. You could make giant ghosts out of old sheets. Bundle up something (wad of newspaper, old tee shirt, etc) into a ball about the size of your head. Put this in the middle of the sheet, and gather the sheet around it. Tie with string around the neck.
You now have a ghost - head and flighty body. Hang from the ceiling or on the walls. Use cut outs of black paper pinned on for eyes and mouth, if you don't want to stain the sheet. You can make baby ghosts the same as this out of sheets of kleenex and draw on eyes and mouth, but they are likely too small to decorate at a dance with.
Make bat outlines out of black construction paper, and hang on strings from the ceiling. I saw on FB where you can draw jack o'lantern faces on milk jugs, (say 3 to 5) cut a hole about the size of a half dollar in the back of each, and then illuminate them with a string of orange hallowe'en lights stuffed into the jugs from the back.
